ALBUM REVIEW: Young Thug’s Slime Season 3

SUMMARY For Young Thug Fans, these has been no shortage of satisfaction in the past year of music. Thugger’s “Barter 6” (April), “Slime Season” (September), and “Slime Season 2” (Halloween), gave 2015 a heavy feel with enough bangers to last another 2 years. 2016 began with promises of a third installment to the Slime Season trilogy but was met with an ITunes album, “I’m Up”, that was not only shorter than Thug’s previous project, but also lacking the preparation and precision that we saw on SS2. Just last week, Thugger led a funeral procession through the streets of Atlanta with a black coffin painted with red “Slime Season 3” symbols. The tape, released early Good Friday morning, gives fans a nice but interesting ending to the Slime Season saga. Starting with a critical banger “With Them”, that Thug released at the Yeezy season 3 fashion show, the tape jumps right into an up-tempo and ruthless rhyme scheme of quick bars and screeching adlibs that leaves each song with Thug’s signature touch. “Memo” follows a dark and heavy bassed beat with a good chorus and solid background sounds and tunes. “Drippin” is the only song on the album that doesn’t make any sense. It’s almost as if he has the opportunity to finish each of his bars but chooses not to. Regardless, the song sounds good towards the end. Thug’s most admirable part of this Tape is how he can lead listeners into an easy and slow 20 seconds and then flip the script and throw illiterate verses your way that leave you off guard. He follows this idea in “Slime Shit” with the help of Yak Gotti giving us the best song on the tape. Throughout the tape we are hit with Boosie Badass references, paying homage to the trap king that was diagnosed with Cancer late last year. “Digits”, “Tattoos”, and “Problem” give us nice and basic tracks with not too much going on that we haven’t seen before. Worth it, Thug’s love song and tribute to his gorgeous fiancé/ girlfriend Jerrika Karlae, feels good in the midst of so many crazy beats and strange voices. Overall, this project is the shortest tape that Thug has ever released but finished the Slime Season legacy with honor and high praise from Kanye West. The tape was produced by LondonOnTheTrack which surprised many as Metro Boomin has left Thug with the most success in recent projects which could explain the change in album covers 4 times. Thugger still has yet to drop MigoThuggin, a Migos and Thug collaboration that was slated to drop last Christmas, and songs he has been working on with Travi$ Scott that previewed on Twitter. We can even possibly hope for a second part to this project but can’t really complain. After all, how can anyone fret when you’ll probably see another Young Thug single in a week.	7.7 OVERALL SCORE
